Engagement in Rome

Silvia & Simone

Saying that Rome is the best city in the world for an engagement photoshoot might sound like a very personal opinion. Yet, Rome offers such a variety of situations, atmospheres, rhythms, and images that it adapts to any style and idea one might want to develop in an engagement session.

Certainly, the role of its history, its propensity to gift those who tread its cobblestones with a constant sensation of strolling through thousands of years of layered stories and passions, lends it a recognizably romantic air.

Trastevere is one of those neighborhoods where getting lost among its narrow and diverse alleys, its walls that tell so many stories, its bridges, its voices, sounds, and scents is a must for those who live there and those who visit Rome even for the first time.

So, imagine a couple of soon-to-be-weds who decide to fix this important moment in their memory, in the history of their life together, and who decide to do it in a place that holds significance for them – perhaps because they met there, or maybe because something special happened between them there in the autumn of some years ago, or even because they want to tie their story to a place that knows how to preserve and tell stories. Actually, let's do this: don't just imagine it, we'll show it to you. They are Silvia and Simone, they are from Rome, they live in and love Rome. They called us and asked us to witness an important moment for them.

“We'd like an engagement photoshoot in Rome. We want to remember this moment, and we'd like you to photograph it.”

That morning, they got dressed – Silvia put on her makeup as she would for a special day – they held hands and decided to spend half a day getting lost in the alleys of Trastevere. We, as witnesses, followed them with our cameras. An engagement photoshoot isn't like a wedding where there are many people, conviviality, things that must happen and do happen. None of that here: we are alone, and nothing particular needs to occur. How do you capture spontaneous images that tell the story of the couple? This is where method and experience come into play. Knowing the couple is crucial – observing them, talking to them, understanding the ways they've developed to interact with each other – if they hold hands, embrace, touch, look at each other. Understanding the common thread that binds their relationship and their couple's mood. And finally, trying to channel all these observations to create images that represent them, that, when they look back at them, they will recognize themselves in.

In these cases, we intervene, we are present, we chat, joke, laugh together, and ask them to do things that are in tune with them and their way of being together. It's an alchemy difficult to achieve and implement, but with time and experience, you learn, even if you'll never learn everything.

“ That warmth that only Rome can give you”

The day was warm, made of the sun that penetrates the alleys and that, as you walk, leaves you with moments of coolness interspersed with bursts of heat, that autumnal warmth that feels pleasant on the skin and that you perceive as a sweet embrace.

We walked around aimlessly for a while, without a specific destination, just as anyone immersing themselves in the alleys of Trastevere should do. Wander around without a goal and without expectations. Rome always offers surprises if you trust it.

In an engagement in Rome, couple portraits that emphasize the people but also the place cannot be missing. So, we stopped here and there to take portraits, always trying to maintain spontaneity and aiming to tell the story of Silvia and Simone.

We ran across bridges, laughed in small squares where Silvia and Simone tried out a dance, and ran away laughing to distract ourselves from the curious gazes of those present.

We had a fantastic morning, and we managed to take away not only an indelible memory in our hearts but also reminders of these memories in photos that Silvia and Simone can look at whenever they want and momentarily jump back to the day of their engagement in Rome.
